VALID8

Zimvo at the VALIDATE Annual Meeting 2025

Dr Zimvo Obasa is a postdoctoral researcher at Stellenbosch University, specialising in molecular biology. In this special VALID8 interview to mark the 1,000th VALIDATE member, Zimvo reflects on her work in TB nanomedicine and his experience growing within the VALIDATE community.

1 – What do you do / what do you research?

I am a researcher at Stellenbosch University, with my research focusing on assessing various nanoparticle formulations as potential vaccine carriers and therapeutic agents against all forms of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

2 – What drew you to studying vaccines?

I was drawn to studying vaccines because I have seen the impact of TB disease in South Africa and the urgent need for better solutions. TB remains a major challenge here, and I wanted to be part of the fight to change that. The growing field of nanomedicine excites me because it offers innovative ways to make vaccines more effective and accessible.

3 – How has VALIDATE shaped your work or career and research so far?

Being awarded the VALIDATE Fellowship has been an exciting milestone for me. It’s a chance to play a key role in advancing TB vaccine discovery and accelerating nanomedicine, while collaborating with a seasoned global community of researchers.

4 – What’s your favourite memory or moment from your time with VALIDATE?

Being part of the Early Career Development Network (ECDN) has been one of my favourite experiences with VALIDATE. It has been incredibly valuable for both my personal and professional growth. One of the most impactful moments was during my fellowship interview preparation, when my subgroup provided valuable advice, asked critical questions during a mock interview, and shared a list of questions that helped me feel confident and well prepared.

5 – What do you value most about being connected to 1,000 researchers across 80+ countries?

What I value most is the sense of connection and shared purpose. Being part of a network of over 1,000 researchers across more than 80 countries is incredible. Every VALIDATE event is a chance to learn, not just from the science, but from the people.

6 – What advice would you give to the 1,000th VALIDATE member joining today?

VALIDATE has so much to offer — make the most of every opportunity. Get involved in networks, apply for the different grants, attend events, ask questions, and connect with other scientists. The more you engage, the more you will gain.

7 – What excites you most about the future of VALIDATE?

Its constant growth and innovation, and the way it keeps creating new opportunities for collaboration and learning, especially for early career researchers.

8 – Describe VALIDATE in one word.

Dynamic.
