The VALIDATE Network was delighted to host Inspiring Futures in Science, a public talk designed to encourage the next generation of scientists to explore the exciting opportunities offered by a career in science.
Held on 7 August 2026 at the Biomedical Research Institute (BMRI), Tygerberg, Stellenbosch University, the event brought together Grade 10 and 11 learners studying Maths, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences for an engaging and inspiring session. The event encouraged learners to recognise their potential and discover the many pathways available through a career in science and biomedical research.
We were privileged to hear from three inspiring speakers:

Professor Admire Dube, University of the Western Cape
Each speaker shared their experiences, insights and passion for science, giving learners a valuable glimpse into the varied and rewarding careers available within the field.

About the Speakers
Dr Liezel Smith is a Senior Scientist and Project Coordinator at Stellenbosch University’s DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Tuberculosis Research. Her research interests include TB transmission, transcriptomic and immunological responses in people with TB, animal models, host–pathogen interactions and vaccine development.
Dr Caryn Fenner is Executive Director of the mRNA Hub at Afrigen Biologics and Vaccines. She has expertise in biomanufacturing, recombinant proteins, therapeutics and biocatalysis. At Afrigen, she has led research and development activities and the WHO-supported Global mRNA Technology Transfer and Training Hub, which aims to strengthen vaccine-development and manufacturing capacity across Africa and other low- and middle-income countries.
Professor Admire Dube is a Professor at the University of the Western Cape whose research focuses on nanomedicine and infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis. His group develops nanoparticles for targeted therapeutic delivery and nanoparticle-based host-directed immunotherapies.
