Dr Cristian Segura-Cerda is a postdoctoral researcher at CIATEJ, Mexico. In this special VALID8 interview marking 1,000 VALIDATE members, Cristian reflects on how the network transformed his career.
1 – What do you do / what do you research?
I am a research assistant with the Infection Immunology Research Group at KCCR. Our team focuses on mycobacterial diseases, particularly host–pathogen interactions in tuberculosis.
2 – What drew you to studying vaccines?
I entered vaccine research during my PhD out of curiosity about biotechnology’s potential to transform health, and that curiosity has guided my career ever since.
3 – How has VALIDATE shaped your work or career and research so far?
VALIDATE marked a clear “before and after” in my career. The training, mentoring, resources, and connections were fundamental in securing a PI position earlier than I otherwise would have.
4 – What’s your favourite memory or moment from your time with VALIDATE?
My favourite moments are arriving at Annual Meetings and realising I’m surrounded by people who share my interests and support new ideas.
5 – What do you value most about being connected to 1,000 researchers across 80+ countries?
I value the multicultural nature of the network and our shared mission despite different backgrounds.
6 – What advice would you give to the 1,000th VALIDATE member joining today?
Welcome — you’re in the right place. Make the most of it!
7 – What excites you most about the future of VALIDATE?
I’m excited to see more young researchers and greater inclusion across regions and communities.
8 – Describe VALIDATE in one word.
Impactful.
