Junior Research Fellow
Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for an initial 1-year (renewable via mutual agreement) contract position of Junior Research Fellow, funded through a NIH funded study in the Wilkinson group, CIDRI-Africa. The successful applicant will be primarily and initially involved in a NIH funded study of the contribution of marginal zone B cells to immunity against tuberculosis. Immunological samples from blood of patients with tuberculosis +/- HIV will be used with recombinant strains of Bacille Calmette Guerin in in vitro culture to investigate mechanisms of regulatory and effector function. Scope however exists to develop a personal research proposal during the research fellowship to research related or other aspects of immunopathogenesis in tuberculosis including studies into tuberculous meningitis and pericarditis and also latent tuberculosis infection.
Requirements:
- A PhD in immunology, Microbiology, bioinformatics or related area
- 4 to 5 years postdoctoral experience
- Relevant experience in tissue culture, including working with clinical samples
- Experience in culturing Mycobacterium tuberculosis within a BSLIII facility
- Experience in flow cytometryo Agree to work with clinical samples from HIV-1 co-infected and potentially drug resistant patients
- Flexible working hours
- Good organization and time management skills
- Computer literacy and a good breadth of data and statistical analysis tools including basic Bioinformatic skills
Responsibilities:
In addition to the research to be carried out, and as part of the candidates’ professional development, the successful candidate will be expected to:
- Contribute to scientific discussion to drive research objectives
- Participate in group meetings and help train students within the group
- Manage laboratory workflow to meet project timelines
- Compile and analyse immunological data
- Prepare manuscripts for publication in international peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Attend and present results at national and international conferences
The annual cost of employment will be in line with UCT recommendations for a Junior Research fellow: R359 281 to R711 230
