The purpose of the role is to provide strategic and operational leadership for the flagship UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship programme – which will commit £900m in its initial phase - attracting and retaining outstanding talent for the UK, and ensuring early career researchers and innovators are supported in progressing to independence.
The Director will report to the Senior Accountable Officer (Professor Fiona Watt) and a Project/Steering Board. They will manage a team of ~twenty staff (Grades F-B), as well as working closely with all the Councils, to reflect sectorial needs and draw on sectorial expertise.

Key responsibilities:
Promoting and developing the Future Leaders Fellowship scheme (FLF) and policies, ensuring that in each sector the scheme adds value and complements existing career support and that across UKRI the £900m investment achieves the aims of:
- attracting and retaining exceptional talent in the UK
- supporting ambitious, novel or multidisciplinary areas of research, which will be of long-term importance for the UK economy and research base
- promoting new ways of working in research and innovation across academia and industry
- overall responsibility for the schemes’ operations, communications, staff and expert panels to ensure that the scheme sets a new standard in cross-Council working and is effective in identifying and supporting exceptional opportunities in all areas of UKRI activity
- developing new insights and evidence on early post-doctoral research and innovation careers in the UK, and using these to contribute to overall UKRI policies and strategy, as well as to refine and evaluate the FLF scheme.
