Programme Manager - Early Career Awards, NC3Rs (MRC) London, May 2018

The role of the Early Career Awards Programme Manager offers a unique opportunity to work with both early career and senior researchers to stimulate change and inspire the next generation of scientists in applying the 3Rs in their research.

The post holder will be responsible for the annual funding calls for the Fellowship and PhD studentship schemes, which aim to embed the 3Rs within the training and research activities of early careers scientists, and for the development and oversight of the training and networking events that the NC3Rs holds for this cohort throughout the year.

The main elements of this role are outlined below:

• Maximise dissemination and uptake of 3Rs advances arising from early career awards by building collaborative relationships with grant holders and students.
• Promote the early career award schemes through institutional visits and presentations.
• Support the application review process including referee selection, allocating applications to Panel members and compiling feedback to applicants.
• Monitor the progress of awards and collate outcomes and impacts reported on Researchfish to produce evaluation reports, scheme reviews and to monitor scheme performance.
• Work with the NC3Rs Communications team to produce impact case studies, press releases, award announcements and other materials aimed at the scientific press, media and public.
• Identify opportunities to work with other research funders on areas of mutual strategic importance to build capacity in the 3Rs.
• Represent the NC3Rs in a variety of collaborations and networks.

The Programme Manager will also contribute to other activities where appropriate and will be part of the Science and Technology group. The ability to work as part of a dynamic team is essential.

Person Specification  

Education, qualifications and training

PhD in a biological science (in vivo experience is desirable)

Previous work experience

Funding organisation experience (is desirable)

Experience of analysing and summarising research outputs and impacts

Experience of organising meetings, workshops or events

Knowledge and experience

An understanding of the issues around the use of animals in research and a demonstrable commitment to the 3Rs

Experience of managing a varied workload and working to deadlines

Excellent IT skills and an ability to use and interrogate computerised systems, including databases, is desirable

Personal skills, behaviours and qualities

Excellent communicator both orally and in writing

Excellent customer service skills

Excellent attention to detail and accuracy

Team player

Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to work well as part of a team
