This is an exciting opportunity for an epidemiologist / medical statistician to work at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine with the MRC Tropical Epidemiology Group and the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH) on a programme of research to improve eye health in low- and middle-income countries, and on several ‘One Health’ research projects investigating the community-level epidemiology and risk factors of endemic zoonotic diseases related to livestock and poultry.
The statistician appointed to this position will work provide input on the design and analysis of epidemiological studies on eye health in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. They will contribute to the design and organisation of new field studies, including the preparation of research protocols, sampling methods, questionnaire design and data handling procedures. The post-holder will undertake statistical analyses of data from field studies and to prepare the results for publication, and also for presentation to funders and the DSMB. A key part of the job is to provide statistical and epidemiological support to PhD students in the ICEH and to contribute to capacity strengthening in statistics & epidemiology in low- and middle-income countries.
The ‘One Health’ projects include those on livestock keeping and local dairy farming in rural Punjab, India peri-urban areas of Cameroon and Senegal, in West Africa and live bird markets in Bangladesh. The post-holder will support local partners in the conduct of the studies, setting up the field sites, implementing and supervising the data collection, monitoring progress as well as maintaining and managing the study databases. They will also provide regular progress reports to study management boards, support the statistical data analysis, and writing up the results for dissemination to the different stakeholders and in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to capacity strengthening in data management and statistical skills in the local partner institutions.
The post is based in central London at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Candidates must have an MSc in Medical Statistics or closely related discipline; substantial practical experience working as a medical statistician, including design and analysis of epidemiological studies and randomized trials and an excellent publication record commensurate with experience. Candidates should also be willing to undertake visits to sub-Saharan African and South Asian countries where the research is being conducted. Experience working as a medical statistician in a low- or middle-income country setting and experience of teaching at university level would be an advantage. The post is available immediately and is funded until 31st December 2019. The salary will be on the Academic scale, Grade 6 scale in the range £38,553 - £43,759 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
