The University of Surrey are seeking an enthusiastic post-doctoral researcher to join our team studying mycobacterial host-pathogen interactions. The position is funded by grants from the Wellcome Trust and the MRC for 3 years. We are particularly looking for a researcher to undertake in vivo work in mouse models of infection in a high containment setting, which takes place in our recently refurbished and well-supported Biomedical Research Facility.
The research is based in the Department of Microbial Sciences in the School of Biosciences and Medicine at the University of Surrey, Stag Hill campus. All post-docs at Surrey are automatically members of our Doctoral College that supports the academic and professional development of postgraduate and early career researchers. You would join the Bacteriology Section, with a particularly strong critical mass of mycobacterial research, encompassing Mycobacterium tuberculosis as well as non-tuberculous mycobacteria.
Dr Simmonds’ group studies the molecular and cellular biology of Buruli ulcer, a devastating “flesh-eating” skin infection, caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. This pathogen makes a unique and fascinating exotoxin named mycolactone, whose mechanism of action was recently discovered by the Simmonds Lab. We are currently investigating how the organism and toxin work to influence the functions of the vasculature and immune cells, particularly macrophages, during infection. Ultimately, we are seeking to develop/test host-directed therapies based on our in vitro data.
The ideal candidate for this post would have a PhD (or be close to completion) in Microbiology, Immunology, Inflammatory Disease or a closely allied subject. We would be particularly keen to hear from those with experience of in vivo work or of working with mycobacteria in high-containment environments. Full training would be given to suitable candidates who are looking to develop their skills in these areas.
For an informal enquiries, please contact Dr Simmonds via email at rachel.simmonds@surrey.ac.uk.
The School of Bioscience and Medicine is proud to have been awarded Silver Athena SWAN status. While this a full-time post, Dr Simmonds would welcome applications from joint applicants wishing to job-share.
