VetHub1 is a £4.2m state-of-the-art veterinary hub to drive forward research to protect both animal and human health. In 2017, Aberystwyth University secured £3 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh Government, to construct fully-equipped, high-specification laboratories and office spaces. Through VetHub1, researchers will work with the livestock industry to develop tests and vaccines that will help reduce losses and improve animal health. In particular, the researchers will be looking at developing solutions for animal-borne diseases that could pass to humans. The facility will also lead to the further development of commercial veterinary practices and other animal health-care, as well as biotechnology, animal food manufacture and other allied industries.
It will also unlock a range of opportunities over the coming years for businesses throughout the livestock supply chain, and in associated industries which will benefit from the new facility and collaborative research opportunities, leading to the development of new products and services for the global market. VetHub1 will provide the infrastructure for academic research in IBERS and the Centre for Excellence for Bovine Tuberculosis, led by Professor Glyn Hewinson.
The role of Laboratory Manager will be a crucial role, to manage the scientific infrastructure of the facility, comprising three CL3 and two CL2 laboratories. As a brand new facility, this is a unique opportunity for an experienced laboratory manager to build their own team, work in state-of-the-art facilities and work with academic staff and industry partners, undertaking world leading research. The successful candidate will also play a key role in developing an important resource for Wales.
