Biography:
I am an Investigator at Institute Gonçalo Moniz, FIOCRUZ-Bahia, Brazil/ My area of expertise is immunology and my main focus of interest is immunoparasitology, trying understanding the immune response to Leishmania sp. in different animal models and also in human beings. We have been working with endemic areas for canine visceral leishmaniasis, characterizing susceptibility and resistance parameters of these animals to leishmania infection. We have also conducted a series of studies evaluating how exposure of dogs to the vector affects the animal's resistance to Leishmania infantum infection. Through collaboration with the NIH, we have found that some components of the saliva of the vector Lutzomyia longipalpis are able to protect mice and hamsters using the natural transmission model of infected sand flies.
We are responsible for the training of several graduate students and the supervision of post docs who actively participate in these studies. We are responsible for the training of several graduate students and the supervision of post docs who actively participate in these studies. We have several international and national collaborations, which have allowed us to characterize inflammatory and immune responses responsible for the protection and pathogenesis of leishmania infections.
Our research lines are funded by Brazilian funding agencies and by our institution FIOCRUZ.
