Biography:
Ciara is currently in the final year of her PhD at the University of York, working on host-parasite interactions in visceral leishmaniasis in the labs of Paul Kaye and Jeremy Mottram. Her project used CRISPR genome editing and molecular parasitology techniques, along with ecological modelling and population dynamics, to develop a system for investigating bottlenecks, dissemination and population dynamics of Leishmania donovani parasites in vivo. This system was then used to investigate immunological mechanisms causing these bottlenecks, to understand how parasite and host interact with each other.
Prior to her PhD, Ciara completed an MSci in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Glasgow in 2020, including a project studying on the mitochondrial biology of Toxoplasma gondii. She also worked at GlaxoSmithKline as a placement student, working on target validation in allergic inflammation.
