Biography:

Shatha Omar is a dedicated researcher from Yemen, who moved to South Africa in 2010 to pursue higher education at the University of Cape Town's Faculty of Health Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. in 2018, focusing on identifying envelope determinants of viral fitness in subtype C HIV for drug and immunogen design. Despite facing the personal challenge of losing her husband during her Ph.D., Shatha completed her studies and emerged as a resilient and accomplished scientist.

Following her Ph.D., she joined the TB Genomics Research Group at Stellenbosch University as a Postdoctoral Fellow under Prof. Rob Warren. Her work has spanned multiple projects, including systematic reviews and collaborative studies on tuberculosis and non-tuberculosis mycobacteria. Currently, Shatha is leading research on a pivotal project focused on the characterization of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in South Africa, examining their influence on macrophage immune responses to other lung pathogens, fostering collaborations with national and international scientists, and contributing to the field through impactful publications.

Shatha’s journey reflects her unwavering commitment to science and resilience in overcoming personal and professional challenges.
