On 7 August 2026, the VALIDATE Network hosted Inspiring Futures in Science at the Biomedical Research Institute (BMRI), Tygerberg, Stellenbosch University. You can now watch all three talks on YouTube using the videos above.

Held as part of our VALIDATE for Schools programme, the event brought together Grade 10 and 11 learners to explore the opportunities offered by careers in science and biomedical research. Three accomplished scientists shared their experiences, insights and passion for their work:

  • Dr Liezel Smith is a Senior Scientist and Project Coordinator at Stellenbosch University’s DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Tuberculosis Research. Her research interests include TB transmission, host immune responses, animal models and vaccine development.
  • Dr Caryn Fenner is Executive Director of the mRNA Hub at Afrigen Biologics and Vaccines. She has extensive experience in biomanufacturing and vaccine development and leads the WHO-supported Global mRNA Technology Transfer and Training Hub, which is helping to strengthen vaccine-development and manufacturing capacity in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Professor Admire Dube is a Professor at the University of the Western Cape whose research focuses on nanomedicine and infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis. His team develops nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery and host-directed therapies.

Through their talks, the speakers demonstrated the range of exciting pathways available within science and encouraged learners to recognise their own potential as the scientists, innovators and leaders of the future.

VALIDATE members are encouraged to hold their own VALIDATE for Schools events. Find out more about the programme and the support available at www.validate-network.org/schools.
