We are seeking to appoint a Clinical Research Fellow or Clinical Assistant Professor. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the expanding programme of clinical and population-based research at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI), KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The post-holder will have a key role in managing, developing and supporting clinical and population-based research activities at the Somkhele site of AHRI, and will be encouraged to develop their own research portfolio. The work will involve activities throughout the project cycle including writing grant proposals, protocols, ethics applications and developing budgets; writing standard operating procedures, training and overseeing field staff in implementation of research studies; data analysis and report writing; co-ordinating clinical and population-based research activities, and supporting other researchers; and liaison with local stakeholders. The postholder will be primarily based at AHRI, Somkhele site. The post is funded by the Wellcome Trust via a strategic award to University College London.
The successful candidate will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant field, and will be fully qualified as a medical doctor, experience in clinical and/or population-based research on HIV and/or TB in a high prevalence setting, evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, evidence of good organizational skills, including effective time management. This full-time post, based in Somkhele, South Africa, is funded until 30 September 2021, with potential for future extension as and when further funding is confirmed. The salary is on the Clinical Research Fellow or Clinical Assistant Professor scale in the range £32,569 - £56,394 per annum. An appointee relocating overseas may be eligible for additional allowances. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
