Project in brief
New methods to detect tuberculosis are desperately needed. We aim to develop a novel diagnostic tool that will quantify the extent of damage caused by tuberculosis in the lungs based on exhaled airflow characteristics. Our cross-disciplinary approach will combine engineering (Vogiatzaki), microbiology (Waddell) and medical imaging (Cercignani) expertise from across university schools to identify signatures of pulmonary lesions caused by tuberculosis. We will correlate tuberculosis disease with pulmonary airflow properties in a simple non-invasive manner using Pulmonary Fluid Dynamics, revolutionising the diagnosis of tuberculosis.
Funding
This is a three-year, full-time position, funded by the University of Brighton starting in April 2020. The funding will cover the university fees, and a PhD stipend at the UKRI rate, £15,009 pa for 2019/20.
