Biography:
Leishmaniasis afflicts more than 12 million people around the world including the United States and causes the highest number of deaths annually in children & adults globally after malaria amongst parasitic diseases. My research is focused on understanding the mechanisms of immunity and immune evasion in leishmaniasis to develop vaccine and immunotherapies for treating this disease. Our research team in collaboration with scientists in leishmaniasis-endemic countries has developed a live attenuated vaccine for this disease using CRISPR technology. That vaccine will soon undergo worldwide testing. We also discovered that the drug ibrutinib, a therapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia, has efficacy in treating visceral leishmaniasis and showed that PI3Kg could be a therapeutic target for host directed therapy for leishmaniasis.
