Biography:

Dr. Preechanukul is currently a lecturer at Department of Medical Science, Amnatcharoen Campus, Mahidol University, Thailand. He obtained a doctoral degree in Tropical Medicine from Mahidol University Thailand, specialising in cellular immunology. He has previously worked on projects exploring NK and T cell responses in melioidosis, a neglected tropical disease caused by the Gram-negative bacterium B. pseudomallei.

After completing his PhD, he moved to the Institute of Immunity and Transplantation, University College London to work as a research fellow. His research supported by NIH focuses on defining the phenotypic and functional characteristics, and heterogeneity of HBV-specific CD8 T cells in both HBV mono-infection and HBV/HIV co-infection using proteomic profiles alongside functional capabilities integrated with single cell transcriptomic analysis, in order to address the impact of long-term therapy on virus-specific responses with the goal of informing therapeutic strategies for immune restoration.

The overarching goal of his research is to understand the direct and immunoregulatory roles of natural Killer (NK) cells in peripheral blood and tissues in patients with infectious diseases such as melioidosis, and HIV/HBV co-infection. NK cells are important in anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-tumour defence and desirable targets for tailored vaccines and immunotherapies. Understanding their phenotypic, metabolic and functional attributes, including adaptation of tissue-resident NK cell subsets, is critical for the development of novel treatment and vaccine strategies.
