Biography:
Clinical Biochemist graduated from the Faculty of Chemical Sciences-National University of Asunción (2003), Magister and PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the Oswaldo Cruz Institute-Brazil (2008-2010 and 2012-2016 respectively). Primary and secondary education in Belgium and the Netherlands. Since 2007, researcher at the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the Institute for Research in Health Sciences (IICS-UNA).
Since 2004 Clinical biochemist at the Central Laboratory of the Hospital de Clínicas - Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM-UNA). Our responsibilities in those institutions include the role of supervisor or teacher of a postgraduate course in Biomedical Sciences, scientific initiation or professional internship. The area of expertise in research is mainly in infectious diseases, with emphasis on Biochemistry, Cellular-Molecular Biology and Immunology, working mainly on the following topics:
i) pathogenesis mechanisms of Mycobacterium leprae with emphasis on pathogen-host cell interaction (Schwann cells, Monocytes, macrophages)
ii) use of specific synthetic peptides of M. leprae or M. tuberculosis in the study of the immune response in infected individuals or contacts for the development of tests for early diagnosis or follow-up
iii) Molecular epidemiology of M. tuberculosis.
iv) Use of molecular tools for the detection of drug resistance in M. tuberculosis or the identification of atypical mycobacteria.
v) local standardization of molecular tools for innovation in genotyping or diagnosis
