Biography:
Director of The Vaccine Confidence Project (VCP); Professor of Anthropology, Risk and Decision Science, Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, LSHTM; Clinical Professor, Department of Health Metrics Science, University of Washington (Seattle). Previously UNICEF’s Global Immunisation Communication and strategy, with a particular focus on new vaccines, chaired GAVI’s Advocacy Task Force, and served on the WHO SAGE Working Group on vaccine hesitancy.
My research focuses on the analysis of social and political factors that can affect uptake of health interventions and influence policies, with a special interest in sentiment analysis using new digital analytic tools to monitor and measure vaccine confidence, public trust issues, and risk and rumour management from vaccine clinical trials to delivery. I served on the FDA Medical Countermeasure (MCM) Emergency Communication Expert Working Group, and am Principle Investigator of the EU/IMI-funded (EBODAC) project on the deployment, acceptance and compliance of a prime-boost Ebola vaccine candidate being trialled in Sierra Leone, DRC, Uganda and Rwanda, and PI leading a 15 country study on vaccine acceptance during pregnancy and willingness of pregnant women to participate in maternal vaccine trials.
