Biography:
I graduated from the University of Warwick with a BSc in Microbiology and Virology and then with a PhD in Biological Sciences. I was an EMBO Long Term fellow with Dusko Ehrlich at the Institut Jacques Monod, University of Paris and subsequently a Postdoctoral Research Assistant with George Brownlee at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford. I began my own research group as a project leader at the NERC Institute of Virology, Oxford and continue it today as Professor of Virology at the University of Reading. My current research interests are in virus-receptor interactions and in the development of novel candidate vaccines. I am co-inventor of recombinant factor IX, manufactured by Wyeth as Benefix and marketed by Pfizer for the treatment of haemophilia B. I serve on several journal editorial boards and grant committees and play an active role in the public understanding of science.
