Biography:
I am a bacteriologist who uses a multidisciplinary approach to define immunity to chronic bacterial pathogens and develop new treatments to control infection. I am a Professor of Medical Microbiology and Deputy Director of the Sydney Institute Infectious Diseases (Sydney ID) at the University of Sydney. I have over 30 years’ experience working with pathogens and have published widely on aspects of bacterial pathogenesis, immunity to infection and vaccine development/testing (128 peer-reviewed articles, >10,000 career citations).
My group has progressed tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19 vaccines from the initial discovery phase (e.g. antigen discovery) to the development of products that are being prepared for clinical trials. I am a Principal Investigator on the Advancing Vaccine Adjuvant Research for Tuberculosis (AVAR-T) contract, a 5-year program funded by the NIH to identify the most promising adjuvant-TB immunogen candidates for clinical development and define immune correlates of protection. I lead the recently established vaccine consortium comprising the University of Sydney, ExcellGene and Bharat Biotech, supported by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), to develop a broadly protective SARS-CoV-2 vaccine.
