Biography:

Dr. Jean-Yves Ekra is a lecturer-researcher at Peleforo Gon Coulibaly University. His research focuses on molecular parasitology and bioinformatics research, specializing in the molecular epidemiology of vector-borne diseases. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Parasitology, and Biotechnology from the Sokoine University of Agriculture (Tanzania), funded by the prestigious PASET-RSIF scholarship. His research focuses on the genetic diversity and drug resistance of pathogenic trypanosomes in West Africa, combining field diagnostics, molecular techniques (PCR, Sanger sequencing), and data analysis.

He has collaborated with international institutions, including the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (USA), where he conducted molecular characterization of drug-resistant trypanosomes and was awarded the 2024 GRIE People’s Choice Award. At the Institut Pierre Richet in Côte d’Ivoire, he supervised multiple MSc students in molecular and microscopic diagnostics of hemoparasites and Helicobacter pylori. His scientific contributions are published in peer-reviewed journals such as Pathogens, Parasites, Hosts, and Diseases, and Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease.

Fluent in French, English, and Swahili, Dr. Ekra combines rigorous fieldwork with advanced biomolecular analysis to address challenges in animal health and disease surveillance in sub-Saharan Africa.
