Biography:
A/Prof Nelita du Plessis is a researcher in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. She obtained an MSc in Human Molecular Genetics and PhD in Molecular Biology. After postdoctoral positions in the Immunology Research Group (SUIRG), she accepted the position as senior scientist, currently leading the Innate Immunity team in the Division of Immunology, Stellenbosch. She runs a program in innate immunity in the field of tuberculosis (TB) and co-infections, investigating regulatory myeloid cells (RMC). Her research focuses on developing myeloid-targeted host-directed therapies for TB; studying host immune responses at the lung infection site; and optimizing biomimetic technologies for 3D TB infection models. Her work integrates cellular, transcriptomic and epigenetic technologies to unravel mechanisms of innate immune susceptibility and protection in TB.
