Weekly round-up #81

We are excited to announce that the 4th VALIDATE pump-priming grant call is now open! This is the final planned pump-priming call for VALIDATE, and the VALIDATE NMB strongly encourage collaborative projects led by and/or involving LMIC researchers. In addition, we particularly welcome projects including any of the following: new collaborations between VALIDATE members, projects led by and/or including Early Career Researchers, projects with industry involvement, cross-pathogen research, cross-discipline research, projects promoting the One Health agenda, in vivo research, and translational research. Projects must concentrate on VALIDATE's four focus pathogens, and fall within the VALIDATE remit of contributing to advancing vaccine development for these pathogens. The grant call deadline is 22nd October 2019, so you have plenty of time to pull together your application, and also to finalise your application in person with your collaborators at our Annual Meeting in October.

On that note, it is just 10 weeks until our 2nd Early Career Researcher Workshops, 3rd Annual Meeting and VALIDATE-BSI 2019 Conference, so this is a reminder that registration for these events closes on the 6th September 2019. Spaces are limited and the events are more than half filled already, so we would recommend applying as soon as possible to reserve your space and avoid disappointment. To find out about the event programmes, speakers, and how to register, visit our Annual Meeting & Conference webpage.

Highlights on Twitter this week: Exciting news as research by VALIDATE members Prof Glyn Hewinson and Prof Martin Vordermeier has paved the new way for a possible breakthrough in the worldwide fight against Bovine TB; an interesting article in The Quartz 'Melioidosis kills half the people it infects, but you've probably never heard of it'; a graphic showing the number of children with TB that are not diagnosed or reported; read the article 'worry is contagious': the vaccine-hesitant parents putting children at risk in The Guardian; Madhukar Pai addresses how drug-resistant TB is a clear and present danger; a study shows that patients treated for visceral leishmaniasis can still transmit the disease; take a look at an interactive video about the symptoms, diagnosis and risks of TB by Beautiful Science; Dr Alasdair Reid highlights how HIV increases the chances of people getting TB; and an interesting infographic unveiling the neglect of leishmaniasis.
