This post is available for one year to be a highly productive, ambitious and collaborative member of the Microbial Biochemistry and Pathogenesis research group led by Professor Miguel A Valvano in the Centre. This position will involve working in a MRC-Confidence-in-Concept research programme that seeks to develop a global anti-Burkholderia vaccine. The project will specifically focus on:
(i) develop and test a genetically engineered vaccine antigen for use in humans and veterinary animals;
(ii) investigate additional infectious challenges with other Burkholderia to evaluate the most appropriate vaccine formulation and increase our understanding of cross-protection; and
(iii) map the nature of the immune response against the most effective vaccine form (e.g. T- vs. B-cell responses).
The research will occur in a highly collaborative team including the participation of Dr Rebecca Ingram and also involves national and international collaborators. The successful applicant will drive this cutting-edge research project and will be involved with supervision, planning, day-to-day lab management, collaborations and outreach.
The successful candidate must have:
- Have a PhD in Immunology, Molecular Microbiology, Molecular Genetics or a closely related area obtained.
- At least 3 years recent research experience in molecular microbiology, immunology or related discipline
- Recent extensive hands-on experience in at least two of the following:
- animal models;
- general microbiology techniques;
- protein production and purification;
- ELISA/ELISpot.
- Recent extensive hands-on experience in at least one of the following:
- molecular bacteriology (specifically construction of mutants and molecular cloning);
- extensive experience with in vivo models (mouse model).
- Recent high-quality original research publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with career stage.
- Experience teaching/supervising/mentoring postgraduate/Undergraduate/school students and visiting researchers in the laboratory.
