Weekly round-up #246

Watch today - VALIDATE Workshop - NIH101: A Guide to Applying for National Institutes of Health Funding
49 VALIDATE members gathered on Zoom to hear Dr Katrin Eichelberg provide invaluable advice on finding funding from the US's National Institutes of Health and tips on putting together an application.
Watch online - The event was recorded and is available to VALIDATE members who have signed our CDA. If you wish to watch the video, you can request access by emailing VALIDATE@ndm.ox.ac.uk.
Next week - Targeting Immunometabolism in Host Defense Against Mycobacterium Tuberculosis with Dr Luciana Balboa

14 December - 15:00 GMT
In this seminar, Dr Balboa will discuss how her team focused on unravelling the immunometabolic pathways that regulates leucocytes’ functions and their impact on the control of TB. To study the impact of TB-associated microenvironment on the functionality of M1 macrophages, they used the acellular fraction of pleural effusions from TB patients (TB-PE). Interestingly, they found that M1 macrophages exposed to TB-PE displayed a lower expression of HIF-1α and a reduced glycolytic activity, impairing the control of bacterial growth.

Highlights on Twitter this week:
The Daily Maverick (South Africa) reported that lessons from COVID-19 are essential in developing a response to TB, Nature released a new resource for researchers, and former head of the Anthony Fauci stated that responding to non-COVID pathogens like TB is crucial. Pharma time reported on a clinical trial taking place in Germany for the VPM1002 vaccine for TB and Prof Susie Dunachie celebrated fellow VALIDATE member Aparna Dravid passing a one-month training course at Oxford. Nature careers had advice for young scientists about protecting research ideas and talked about a network for mothers in science.
