Weekly round-up #50

50 weekly round-ups later and the VALIDATE Network is still expanding and helping to build connections around the world between researchers who are pushing boundaries in an effort to develop effective vaccines for TB, leishmaniasis, leprosy and melioidosis. We now have 192 members from 97 organisations across 26 countries. We're an open and inclusive network, so do mention VALIDATE to your colleagues, collaborators, industry partners and research staff and encourage them to join. The benefits of VALIDATE membership can be found here.

This week saw VALIDATE Director Prof Helen McShane taking part in a panel discussion on the topic of "What does the TB vaccine field do now?" at the TBScience 2018 pre-conference being held in parallel to the 49th Union World Conference on Lung Health in The Hague from the 23rd to the 27th October 2018. We hope that some of our members made it to the event and joined in the discussion.

The final plans are coming together for the VALIDATE 2nd Annual Meeting on 6-7 November, and our Early Career Researchers Workshop on the 5th, both in York UK. You can find the latest information here. We look forward to catching up with many of our members at the meeting.

There is now less than 1 week to go until our current VALIDATE Training Grant call closes, so get your application in asap! Training grants are open to all Associate members and give you up to £3,000 for continuing professional development. You could use it to attend a course or workshop, visit another VALIDATE member's lab to learn a new technique or assay, visit one of our industry partners, present at a conference, or for any other career development opportunity that would advance your career. The grant covers travel and subsistence, visas, registration fees and any other associated costs. Find out more here - and apply now!

On Twitter this week: read the results of the E-DETECT TB consortium survey of all EU/EEA member states about their national TB strategies, priority actions/populations and barriers to implementation; Professor Heidi Larson writes in Nature about the pandemic risk posed by viral misinformation; find out what researchers have discovered about the history of TB dispersal; Prof Madhu Pai writes about the imagination and ambition needed to eradicate TB; see the results of a report detailing how the number of unvaccinated toddlers in the US has quadrupled; and learn how the MRC grant peer review process works.
