The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Northern Ireland invites applications for its postgraduate studentships. These enable students to conduct research leading to a PhD qualification at a university in the UK or the Republic of Ireland. Priority areas for this call include:
•animal disease – horizon scanning and antimicrobial resistance – emerging risks;
•bovine tuberculosis;
•improved diagnostics and control of production diseases in the Northern Ireland cattle population;
•animal welfare
Applicants must be British citizens, EU nationals or a relevant family member of an EU national. Children of Swiss nationals or Turkish workers and individuals who have indefinite leave to remain in the UK may also apply. Applicants must hold or expect to get at least one of the following: a first or upper second class honours degree, or a lower second class honours degree plus a master’s degree in a subject of direct relevance to the proposed research topic. For the full studentship award, applicants must have been ordinarily resident in Northern Ireland for the full three year period before the first day of the first academic year. For a tuition fee only award, applicants must have been resident in the European Economic Area or Switzerland throughout the three-year period immediately preceding the date of application. Individuals who already hold a doctoral degree, or have been registered on a programme of research leading to the award of a doctoral degree on a full-time basis for more than one year or equivalent part-time basis, may not apply.
The full award includes the cost of approved fees as well as maintenance support over three years, and it may also cover conference expenses for presenting research, overseas fieldwork costs and research training support grant. Studentships will start on 1 October 2019 and end on 30 September 2022.
