You will provide leadership for MRC Health & Safety and the development and implementation of MRC Health & Safety management systems providing “Head of Profession” leadership and to provide assurance with regards to Health & Safety to MRC senior management and UKRI Head of Health & Safety.
Main duties/key responsibilities:
The role involves:
- Overall responsibility for MRC’s Health & Safety
- Overseeing the management, development and implementation of MRC’s H&S policy, management system and strategy
- Manage/oversee the implementation of the MRC H&S plan and monitor the performance against targets set
- Provide advice to MRC staff on all aspects of H&S
- Establish a close working relationship with the MRC Units and Institutes and work with them to establish a comprehensive H&S plan, monitoring performance and providing assistance to establish improvement plans where required
- Organising training and supporting/assisting Institutes in the development of risk/special assessments as required
- Support/assist the Institutes in conducting H&S inspections and prepare reports/documents as required
- Collating data from reporting system (SHEAssure), analysing and advising upon the H&S performance of MRC and preparing reports for MRC Management Board and UKRI Head of H&S
- Conduct or assist with internal audits of all MRC sites (see MRC Institutes below)
- Conduct/organise any relevant H&S training for staff as required (including first aid and fire safety)
- To carry out, or assist with the carrying out, of investigations into accidents and near-miss incidents in the Institutes and to record findings. Manage any potential claims arising and liaise with approving authorities to conclude these cases
- Manage the MRC Corporate H&S budget
- Liaise with other Research Councils, UKRI, external stakeholders and related organisations on H&S matters of common interest
- Implement practical and effective methods, both preventative and remedial, of promoting H&S and safe working practices in the workplace
- Recommend and implement control measures and advise on the standard of P.P.E. issued to employees
- Advise the Director Capital & Estates of all incidents reportable under R.I.D.D.O.R.
- To identify areas where training/certification is required to meet the standards imposed by Legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, or H.S.E. guidance. Arrange such training/certification once identified
- Attend and support the UKRI H&S Working Group meetings and UKRI H&S Consultation Meetings and provide briefings to the Director
- Capital & Estates and MRC Institute H&S Professionals following meetings
- Chair cross-MRC H&S meetings
- Keep up to date with changes in current legislation (attending courses/seminars where necessary) and implement such changes where relevant.
- Keeping MRC’s leadership team up to date of any new, relevant legislation
- Liaise with relevant statutory and/or legislative organisations regarding H&S aspects in the Institutes as required (licenses, etc. for radiation, hazardous materials, controlled substances, etc.) and ensure that documentation is kept up to date and in the respective MRC depository
- Maintaining the MRC H&S culture and acting as “Head of Profession” for H&S to lead, develop and create a focus to support its H&S professionals in providing a common consistent approach; policy and clear standards; coordination and communication; sharing of resources; training; access to specialist assistance; mentoring, learning and development of H&S
- Any other ad hoc health and safety duties as required.
