The Academy of Medical Sciences is delighted to be working with the Royal Society and British Academy to offer Newton Advanced Fellowships, available through the Government Newton Fund which is part of the UK’s official development assistance. The Newton Fund is a new initiative that aims to develop the long-term sustainable growth and welfare of the partner country through building research and innovation capacity.
We will fund, for up to three years, early career group and network leaders in partner countries to develop their research by linking them with some of the best research groups in the UK. The primary aims of the Advanced Fellowships are to:
- Support the development of a well-trained research community who can contribute to advancing economic development and social welfare of the partner country, by transferring new skills and creating new knowledge.
- Strengthen research excellence in the partner country by supporting promising independent early to mid-career researchers and their research groups and networks.
- Establish long term collaborative links between the next generation of research leaders, and their groups and networks in the partner country, and the UK, to benefit both research communities.
Collaborations should focus on a single project involving the overseas-based scientist (‘the Applicant’) and UK-based scientist (“the Co-applicant”). To be eligible to apply the Applicant must:
- have a PhD or equivalent research experience.
- hold a contract in an eligible university or research institute (in the partner countries), which must span the duration of the project.
- have no more than 15 years (18 years for researchers from China) postdoctoral experience.
And the Co-applicant must:
- be an independent academic researcher based in the UK
- hold a permanent or fixed-term contract in a University or eligible research organisation for the duration of the project.
Each round is open to researcher from specific Newton partner countries. Please check the scheme notes and the top of the page to see which countries are eligible for the current round. Please see page 4 of the scheme notes for country specific eligibilty.
Before applying, please ensure that you meet all the eligibility requirements, which are explained in the scheme notes.
The Academy of Medical Sciences offers these fellowships for researchers in clinical and patient oriented research only.
Our partner countries for our Newton Fellowships (currently Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa and Turkey) also offer scholarships and grants to UK researchers to enable them to spend time undertaking research in these countries.
