Deadline date: 2 Aug 2019 12:00pm BST
We are seeking a senior researcher who will be appointed through the University of Oxford to develop and lead a laboratory-based programme of research focused on one or more of the infectious diseases important to Vietnam and the region. The precise focus of the research will depend upon the interests and skills of the candidate and how they can be integrated into OUCRU’s current and future research programme. Once in post, it is anticipated that the postholder would successfully apply for the title of Associate Professor or full Professor (dependent upon previous experience and attainment) at the University of Oxford. The University does not confer these titles before appointment.
The post-holder will be based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where OUCRU has large and wellequipped research laboratories. These include facilities for wet-lab microbiology (including a bio-safety level 3 suite), high throughput nucleic acid handling systems (automated DNA extraction, real-time PCR, 2 Illumina Mi-Seqs and a minION platform), and immunology (Flow cytometry and Luminex array).
Our interests are broad and include bacterial (e.g. salmonella, shigella, tuberculosis, tetanus), parasitic (e.g. malaria), fungal (e.g. Cryptococcus), and viral infections (e.g. Dengue, hepatitis C, enteroviruses). OUCRU’s overall research impact is greatly enhanced by its capacity to conduct high-quality laboratory science.
The post holder will report to the Director (Professor Guy Thwaites) and will be responsible for:
Delivering an internationally competitive programme of laboratory-based research
Developing a scientific strategy for their group’s research and scientific development that complements and strengthens OUCRU’s evolving research interests
Supervising and developing scientists within the research group including Post-doctoral scientists, and PhD and MSc students
Actively engaging with OUCRU’s hosts, the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi, and with other important collaborators in the city and the region to formulate relevant research questions
Developing and enhancing OUCRU’s overall research programme in collaboration with internal and external scientists
Generating significant external research income
Working closely with the OUCRU Laboratory Manager to ensure safe and best practice within OUCRU laboratories
Lead and collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports, journal articles and present papers and posters
Act as a source of information and advice to the OUCRU research community on scientific protocols and experimental techniques
