Biography
Dr David Smith is an Early Career Researcher and Moredun Fellow at the Moredun Research Institute, where he is establishing his first research laboratory. He holds a BSc in Zoology (Liverpool John Moores University, UK), an MPhil in Biological Sciences with specialism in Microbiology (Newcastle University, UK) and a PhD in Biological Sciences (Queen’s University Belfast, UK), in which he specialized in Parasitology under the supervision of Prof John Dalton. Following his PhD, David undertook a post-doctoral research position at the University of Michigan (USA) in the laboratory of Professor Vern Carruthers, whereby he worked on a number of projects focused on Toxoplasma gondii chronic persistence within the intermediate host and anti-bradyzoite drug development. David’s primary research interests centre on how parasites are able to invade and persist within their host and to use this knowledge in the development of novel and innovative prophylactics, treatments and diagnostics
