Biography:
Currently as Senior Research Fellow, my work is focused on studying the possible reasons behind hypopigmentation in PKDL. They exist in two distinct clinical forms, namely 'polymorphic PKDL' characterized by macules, papules and/or nodules, and 'macular PKDL' characterized by hypopigmented patches. The hypopigmentary patches often pose a diagnostic dilemma to the clinicians and often misdiagnosed with vitiligo, pityriasis versicolor or leprosy. But the reasons behind hypopigmentation in PKDL are still unknown. It remains unclear whether infiltrating cells alone or a combination of residual dermal cells and infiltrating cells contribute to these alterations. In hypopigmentary dermatosis, e.g. vitiligo, most of the research work has been done to find out the possible reasons behind hypopigmentation. Accordingly, my study aimed to find out whether the same scenarios replicated in PKDL if any, which may possibly lead to hypopigmentation.
