Biography

Dr Emma Carter is a clinical research fellow and registered MD student at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and an ST4 in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology. She is passionate about the use of human challenge models in vaccine and therapeutic research, in particular the development of these models for tuberculosis (TB). She is currently involved in setting up a human challenge model for TB using intradermal BCG with the Liverpool Vaccine Group at LSTM which will commence shortly. This team has a wealth of experience in pneumococcal human challenge models and is currently conducting the largest human challenge study to date. The team's ambition is to optimise and expand the BCG human challenge model so that it may be used for testing TB vaccines and therapeutics both in the UK and in high TB burden settings in parallel. Her other research interests include the management of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) and she is conducting a UK-wide multi-centre retrospective cohort study of TBM management.
