VALIDATE ECR Summer Showcase Seminare - Session 2

Last week we held our Second ECR Summer Showcase. Assistant Professor Nargis Khan from the University of Calgary, Canada, Dr Laura Sibley from the UK Health Security Agency, United Kingdom and Dr Cristian Segura-Cerda from CIATEJ, Mexico (who also acted as chair), gave short talks and took questions from fellow VALIDATE members. 31 VALIDATE Members attended from 25 countries.

We will hold similar ECR Focused events in the future. If you have research you want to present, let VALIDATE know.

Training Grants Round 13 Awarded

Training Grant 13 awarded

Congratulations to our two amazing awardees!

Dr Margaret Nolan from Stellenbosch University in South Africa will be using the grant to attend two workshops in the USA: The Immune Resilience of Aging at The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, Farmington, Connecticut and the second being the 20th Annual Workshop on the Pathology of Mouse Models for Human Disease at The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine. Dr Nastassja Kriel, aslo from Stellenbosch University, will use her grant to attend the a Summer School in Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona in Spain, which will provide hands-on training in mass spectrometry-based computational analysis using MaxQuant and Perseus.

VALIDATE training grants are open to all Associate members, enabling them to take advantage of a training opportunity to help progress their careers. You can find out more about our grants, and how to apply, on our training grants page.

 

Funding:

  • AREF Fellowship - This is a 2-year fixed term full-time training fellowship with compensation including monthly stipend to cover living expenses and support for international travel for training purposes - deadline 22 September 2022
  • Funded PhD: Unlocking the relationship between host metal distribution and pathogen phenotype in tuberculosis - Use mycobacterial genetics and transcriptomics, alongside cutting-edge elemental ion beam mapping, to define the distribution of metals in M.tb biofilms and lung tissues, and characterise the impact of metal accumulation or depletion on M.tb - deadline 14 August 2022
  • ERC Proof of Concept Grants - Funding to maximise the value of the excellent research that the ERC funds, by funding further work to verify the innovation potential of ideas arising from ERC funded projects - deadline 29 September 2022
  • ERC Starting Grants - Are you a talented early-career scientist who has already produced excellent supervised work, is ready to work independently and shows potential to be a research leader? The ERC Starting Grant could be for you - deadline 22 October 2022
  • ERC Synergy Grants 2022 - Are you a researcher that wants to address a research problem so ambitious, that can not be dealt with you and your team alone? The Synergy Grants could be for you - deadline 8 November,2022

Highlights on Twitter this week:

The University of Oxford began recruiting for a Phase I TB Vaccine trial, The WHO released their first report on tackling drug resistant bacteria (which includes vaccines), and we shared a video from GVIRF discussing Vaccines as tools to prevent antimicrobial resistance.  SATVI shared WHO’s new guidance on TB, NPR wrote about the plunge in global vaccine uptake, and Plos discussed academia’s “Old Boy” problem. We celebrated Prof Tom Solomon receiving his CBE, the BSI launched their Diversity and Inclusion grants, and we congratulated our training grant winners.
