Funding:

  • OWSD Early Career Fellowship - award of up to USD 50,000 offered to women who have completed their PhDs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects - deadline 19 September 2022
  • Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships - Provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social, and research-based growth - deadline 21 September 2022
  • AREF Fellowship - This is a 2-year fixed-term full-time training fellowship with compensation including a monthly stipend to cover living expenses and support for international travel for training purposes - deadline 22 September 2022
  • AAS - African Postdoctoral Training Initiative Fellowships - Training early career scientists to respond to Africa's challenges in global health - deadline 30 September 2022

Highlights on Twitter this week:

There was continuing reporting in the media about BCG’s apparent ability to protect against COVID from the Independent UK, The New York Times, news GP, The Boston Globe, and Leiria Economica. Nature reported on the research funding struggles in post-Brexit UK, we congratulated our little sister Bactivac on their 5th birthday, and researcher Lisa Nivison-Smith explained how tweeting can improve writing skills. The University of Buffalo reported on Jonathan F Lovell’s research on a new TB vaccine, The UN AIDS  Programme shared Madhu Pai’s call for the world to address racism in global health, and the BSI gave a two-week warning for abstract submissions to their 2022 Congress. The US CDC issued an alert after detecting melioidosis and Medical News reported on BCG's potential in protection against bladder cancer. Nature reported on cases of bullying and exploitation of researchers on foreign visas, gave some advice for protecting yourself against bullying, and reported on the need to put Neglected Tropical Diseases in the spotlight.
